How we research, rank and recommend

County Cremation is an independent UK directory. This page sets out how we research providers, how we rank them, and how to challenge anything we publish.

1. Who we are

An independent UK cremation directory

County Cremation is an independent directory of cremation providers and crematoria serving England and Wales. The site is published by County Cremation and operated as a publishing business by Global Digital Solutions Limited. We are not part of any cremation provider, funeral director group, or industry trade body. We have no ownership stake in any provider listed on the site and no provider has any ownership stake in us.

The directory is maintained by the County Cremation editorial team, which is responsible for every word published on the site, every ranking decision and every provider recommendation. Editorial enquiries and factual corrections go to help@countycremation.co.uk.

2. Our independence

County Cremation is independent of every provider it lists. We are not affiliated with any cremation provider on the site, including Best Direct Cremation, and the same applies to every other provider that appears on the comparison page or any county page.

We recommend Best Direct Cremation as our top UK provider for 2026 because they came out on top against the published criteria set out further down this page — price, local independent funeral director network, accreditation, transparency, and care of the deceased. The recommendation is the conclusion of our research.

If at any point a different provider scores better than Best Direct Cremation against the criteria below, the recommendation will change. The page you are reading is the public commitment that the ranking on this site is built on research and nothing else.

3. How we rank providers

Every provider on the comparison page is scored against the same five criteria:

  1. All-inclusive price. The headline price the family actually pays once doctor's fees, the cremation fee, the coffin, collection and the return of ashes are included. Providers that advertise a low headline price but add mandatory extras at the point of arranging are scored on the total, not the headline.
  2. Local independent funeral director network. Whether the provider uses a network of local, vetted, accredited independent funeral directors near the family, or routes every collection to a centralised regional hub. We weight strongly toward providers that keep the deceased close to home.
  3. Accreditation. Membership of NAFD, SAIF or both for the funeral directors actually carrying out the work. We verify accreditation against the trade body's own member directory, not the provider's marketing.
  4. Transparency. Whether the provider publishes a clear, complete price; explains what is and is not included; and discloses any add-on costs before the family commits.
  5. Care of the deceased. Where the deceased is kept between collection and cremation, the standard of care given, and how the ashes are returned to the family.

Rankings are reviewed at least quarterly. We last reviewed the full UK comparison on 2026-05-20.

4. Sources we use

We rely on primary UK sources wherever possible — gov.uk pages for register offices and bereavement payments, the NAFD and SAIF member directories for accreditation, the Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities for crematorium data, each provider's own published pricing for the comparison, and the Competition and Markets Authority's Funerals Market Investigation Order 2021 for the legal framework providers must operate within.

5. Corrections and complaints

If anything on County Cremation is factually wrong — a price has changed, a crematorium has closed, an accreditation has lapsed, a fact is misstated — please tell us. Email help@countycremation.co.uk with the page URL and what is wrong. We aim to acknowledge corrections within two working days and to correct or remove the offending content within five. Material corrections are dated at the foot of the relevant page.

If you are unhappy with how a provider listed on the site has treated you, the routes for complaint are: the provider's own published complaints procedure first; then the relevant trade body (NAFD or SAIF) for accredited providers; and the Funeral Service Consumer Standards Review for sector-wide concerns. County Cremation does not resolve disputes between families and providers, but we will record substantiated complaints against any provider in our ranking review.
